অবিনশ্বর জীবাত্মা ও শাশ্বত পরমাত্মার মধ্যে চিরন্তন যোগসূত্রের উপলব্ধি এবং বিশ্বাস, আচার-বিধি ও সামাজিক প্রতিষ্ঠানের মাধ্যমে সেই উপলব্ধির প্রকাশই ধর্ম। যেদিক থেকেই দেখি না কেন, এটি একটি প্রবল আন্তর প্রেরণা যা ব্যক্তিবিশেষের সমগ্র জীবনকে গভীরভাবে প্রভাবিত করে। সেজন্য স্বাভাবিকভাবেই ধর্ম মানব-মনে প্রায়শঃ তীব্র আবেগ ও প্রতিক্রিয়া জাগায়। অবশ্য মানুষকে শুধু ঈশ্বরের সঙ্গে যুক্ত করা নয়, মানুষকে মানুষের সঙ্গে যুক্ত করাও ধর্মের একটি বিশেষ কাজ। এই বিশেষ কাজটি ভুলে গেলে ধর্ম একটি ধ্বংসের যন্ত্রে পরিণত হয় ধর্মভাবের উদ্দীপনা বোঝা যায়, কিন্তু ধর্মের নামে বিচারহীন ব্যবহার কখনই বাঞ্ছনীয় নয়।
বক্তৃতা ও রচনার মাধ্যমে নিজেদের বক্তব্য প্রচারের আগে, তাতে সাধারণ মানুষকে বিভক্ত করবে, না একতাবদ্ধ করবে, অথবা তাতে বিরোধ সৃষ্টি করবে, না সংহতি আনবে - সেকথা ধর্মীয় নেতাদের বিশেষভাবে বিবেচনা করা প্রয়োজন। নিজের ধর্ম নিয়ে যিনি যতই গর্ববোধ করুন না কেন, ভুললে চলবে না যে, মানুষ আজ এমন এক বহু বিচিত্র সামাজিক পরিবেশে বাস করে, যেখানে কোনরূপ একাত্মতা সম্ভব নয়। বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তি, সংস্কৃতি ও বাণিজ্য, এবং গণতান্ত্রিক সমাজের চাপ মানুষকে জটিল ও বিচিত্র এক বহুজনবন্ধনমুক্ত পরিমণ্ডলে নিবিড়ভাবে একত্রিত করছে। এমতাবস্থায় সবচেয়ে প্রয়োজন সমন্বয় ও শাস্তির। এই প্রয়োজনে গঠনমূলক ভূমিকা ধর্মসমূহই নিতে পারে ও তা নেওয়া উচিত। এ প্রসঙ্গে স্বামী নিখিলানন্দ বলছেন, “মানবজাতি আজ এক সাংঘাতিক ব্যাধিগ্রস্ত। এই ব্যাধি মূলতঃ আধ্যাত্মিক ; রাজনৈতিক বিরোধ, অর্থনৈতিক বিক্ষোভ, এবং নৈতিক বিভ্রান্তি এর বাহ্যিক লক্ষণমাত্র। মানুষ তার প্রতিবেশীর সঙ্গে, প্রকৃতির সঙ্গে, নিজের ও তার স্রষ্টার সঙ্গে বিবাদরত । লোভ, ক্ষমতালিপ্সা ও ক্রোধ সর্বব্যাপ্ত। অসৎ অভিলাষ ও সন্দেহ আন্তঃসাম্প্রদায়িক ও অন্তর্দেশীয় সম্পর্কের মূল উৎসকেই বিষাক্ত করছে। একমাত্র জিগীষু শুভশক্তিই মানবসমাজের অধোমুখকারী জিগীষু অশুভ শক্তির মোকাবিলা করতে পারে । আমাদের চিন্তায় একটা মৌল পরিবর্তন আবশ্যিক। মানুষের স্বভাবের রূপান্তর ঘটাতে হবে। কিন্তু এই রূপান্তর ফলিত মনোবিদ্যা, বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তিবিদ্যা অথবা সামরিক, রাজনৈতিক বা অর্থনৈতিক চুক্তির মাধ্যমে আসতে পারে না। ধর্মই এই পরিবর্তন সাধনে অনেকখানি সক্ষম। পৃথিবীর শ্রেষ্ঠ ধর্মগুলি মানব- সমাজকে এ কর্মসাধনে অনুপ্রাণিত করতে দায়বদ্ধ।
“মানবসমাজকে গ্রাস করার জন্য যেমন রয়েছে নানান বিপদ, তেমন মহিমময় বিশ্বসৃষ্টির জন্যও রয়েছে অনন্ত সম্ভাবনা। দূরত্ব লোপ পেয়েছে এবং মানুষ এখন আগের থেকে ভালভাবেই নিজেদের সঙ্গে অন্যের সাফল্য ও ব্যর্থতাকে মিলিয়ে দেখতে পারে। যথার্থ জ্ঞানে প্রত্যেকের অবাধ অধিকার এবং প্রত্যেকেই তা শিখে ইচ্ছামত প্রয়োগ করতে পারে। এই শুভসময়ে মানুষের শান্তি ও মুক্তির লক্ষ্যে ধর্মসমূহের নির্দেশক হিসাবে কাজ করা কর্তব্য। অবসাদগ্রস্ত মানবজাতিকে একটা গাইবার মত গান তারা উপহার দিক।”
Religion In The Modern World
Religion is the realization of the eternal link between the imperishable soul and the eternal Supreme Soul and the expression of that realization through belief, ritual and social institutions. Whichever way we look at it, it is a strong inner motivation that deeply affects the entire life of the individual. That is why religion often evokes strong emotions and reactions in the human mind. Of course, not only connecting people with God, but also connecting people with people is a special function of religion. Religion becomes an instrument of destruction when this special function is forgotten. Religious leaders need to be especially careful before spreading their message through speech and writing, whether it will divide or unite the common people, or whether it will cause conflict or unity. No matter how proud one feels about his religion, he must not forget that people today live in such a diverse social environment, where no kind of unity is possible. Science and technology, culture and commerce, and the pressures of democratic society are bringing people closer together in a complex and heterogeneous environment. In such a situation, coordination and punishment are most needed. Religions can and should play a constructive role in this need. In this context, Swami Nikhilananda says, "Mankind today is suffering from a deadly disease. This disorder is primarily spiritual; Political strife, economic unrest, and moral confusion are only outward symptoms. Man is in conflict with his neighbor, with nature, with himself and his creator. Greed, powerlessness and anger are all-pervasive. Ill-wishers and suspicions are poisoning the very source of inter-communal and intra-national relations. Only Jigishu good power can counter the Jigishu evil power that is downgrading the human society. A fundamental change in our thinking is necessary. Human nature should be transformed. But this transformation cannot come through applied psychology, science and technology, or military, political or economic agreements. Religion is most capable of effecting this change. The best religions of the world are responsible for inspiring the human society to do this.
“Just as there are dangers to befall mankind, so there are endless possibilities for a glorious world creation. Distance has disappeared and people can now compare their own successes and failures better than ever before. Everyone has a free right to accurate knowledge and everyone can learn it and apply it as they wish. In this auspicious time, it is the duty of the religions to act as guides for the peace and liberation of the people. May they give a song to the depressed mankind to sing.”
